    Questions 9 to 18

Read the passage below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

    Shopping Mall vs Market

People shop for many (0) reasons. They may buy daily needs, gifts, or just shop to relax. Two popular places to do just that are shopping malls and markets. Even though the two places sell things, they are quite (9) ___________ in many ways. Both have their own attractions, but one suits me more than the other.

First, a mall is a large building with many shops inside. It is clean, air-conditioned, and often has modern (10) ___________. It offers a wide variety of products, from branded clothes and shoes to electronics and books. Most malls also have restaurants, cafés, and cinemas, so people can enjoy food and entertainment while shopping. Prices are usually (11) ___________, and customers can pay by cash, credit card, or e-wallet. It is a pleasant and (12) ___________ area, especially for families with young children.

On the other hand, a market is often an open-air site or a row of small (13) ___________. It is usually crowded and noisy, but it is full of life and colour. Many sellers sell fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, local snacks, clothes, and handmade merchandise. They are usually cheaper compared to products at the malls, and it is (14) ___________ to bargain with the hawker for a better deal. Although markets are not as advanced or clean, buyers can have a chance to buy local and traditional goods.

For me, I prefer shopping at the market because I enjoy the busy and exciting (15) ___________. Not to mention, it is where I can find natural and cheap stuff. I also like talking to the vendors and (16) ___________ more about their items. It makes shopping more personal and fun. However, if I want to relax somewhere clean and quiet, or to just watch a movie after shopping, I will go to a shopping mall.

In conclusion, both shopping malls and markets have their advantages. Malls are cosy, and offer many (17) ___________, such as cinemas, game arcades, and a variety of dining options. Meanwhile markets are lively, and more affordable. Thus, it depends on what kind of (18) ___________ you want. For me, the market is a better choice for everyday shopping, but the mall is a nicer and more relaxing spot to hang out.

    Questions 19 to 26

You are going to read an extract from a narrative recount. For questions 19 - 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

The wind carried a sharp, salty scent as Maya zipped up her jacket and stepped onto the beach, the cold biting through the fabric as clouds gathered overhead. Although her mother had asked her to stay home and help clean, Maya had stormed out after an argument, needing air and needing space. The beach was usually her escape. But this morning, something felt different – tense, unsettled, as if the sea were holding its breath. Then she saw it.

At first, it looked like driftwood. But as she got closer, her heart lurched. Lying motionless on the wet sand was a turtle – large, battered, and barely breathing. Its dull eyes stared ahead, and one flipper twitched weakly. Kneeling beside it, Maya saw a long strip of plastic dangling from its mouth, half-buried in the sand. Her throat tightened. She remembered a documentary they had watched in class: turtles mistaking plastic for jellyfish, dying slowly as it blocked their insides.

She reached into her pocket and grabbed her phone. No signal. Panic stirred. She gently tugged the plastic. The turtle flinched and let out a low, pitiful sound. It was lodged deep. Her mind raced. If she ran for help, it might be too late. If she stayed, she could not do anything.

Then she remembered: an old lifeguard hut stood near the cove, about ten minutes away. “I’ll be back,” she whispered, brushing sand off the shell. “Hold on.”

She ran. Sand flew beneath her shoes as the wind picked up and rain began to fall. Her lungs burned, but she did not stop. The hut was locked, dark. Her heart sank, but then she spotted a red emergency box on the wall. Inside, a two-way radio. She pressed the button, her voice shaking.

“This is Maya. I’m at South Point Beach. A turtle is stranded with plastic in its mouth. It’s alive but weak. Please, send help.”

Static. Then a voice crackled through: “Message received. Rescue team en route. Stay with the animal.”

She ran back, soaked and breathless. The turtle had not moved much. She knelt beside it, shielding its head with her jacket, whispering softly, though she did not know if it understood.

Minutes passed. Then, flashing lights appeared on the horizon, followed by the hum of an engine. Two rescuers rushed toward her with gear and a stretcher.

“You did well,” one said, crouching beside her. “It still has a chance.” They worked quickly, gently lifting the turtle and checking its breathing. Another rescuer nodded. “Swallowed plastic. But we’ve seen worse. It’s going to the marine centre.” As the van disappeared into the rain, Maya remained where she was, the waves crashing beside her. Somewhere beyond the shore, more creatures like this one swam through polluted waters, unseen.

That night, after a hot shower and dinner, she sat at her desk and began to type. Not for school. Not for likes. Just a truth that pressed on her chest:

“We are part of nature, not separate from it. What we throw away doesn’t vanish; it returns. Sometimes in the mouth of an innocent animal. If we stay silent, nothing changes. But if we speak, maybe something will.”

She didn’t know if the turtle would live. But she had spoken, and maybe that was where change began.

    (19)

From paragraph 1, what is the main reason Maya went to the beach that morning?

    (20)

From paragraph 2, what was Maya’s initial impression of the object lying on the sand?

    (21)

Which of the following best reflects Maya’s character as revealed in the story?

    (22)

Which event marked the most significant turning point in the story?

    (23)

Why did Maya hesitate before removing the plastic from the turtle’s mouth?

    (24)

What message is MOST clearly conveyed by the events in the story?

    (25)

What does the rescuer likely mean when saying, “You did well” to Maya?

    (26)

What effect does the final line, “But she had spoken, and perhaps that was where change began” have on the reader?

The Importance of Spending Money Wisely

Spending money is something we all do, whether it is for food, clothes or entertainment. However, it is important to spend money wisely. This means thinking carefully before buying something and making sure it is something you really need. When you spend money in a smart way, you can save more and avoid stress later. Being wise with your money can also help you feel more in control of your life.

One of the first steps to spending money wisely is knowing the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things you must have, such as food, shelter and clothes. When young people learn how to save and spend wisely early in life, they are more likely to become responsible adults.

Not spending money wisely can lead to many problems. (30) ___________ This can cause stress and even debt. For instance, if someone always buys new clothes but forgets to pay for school fees or food, they may end up in trouble. That is why it is important to think carefully before spending.

There are many ways to become a smart shopper. One tip is to compare prices before you buy something. (31) ___________ Another tip is to wait for sales or discounts. Buying during sales can help you save a lot of money. Also, try to pay with cash instead of a credit card, so you are more aware of how much you are spending.

Saving money is just as important as spending wisely. (32) ___________ You can save for future needs like school trips, gifts or emergencies. Having some money saved gives you peace of mind and more choices. You do not need to save a lot at once; even small amounts add up over time.

In conclusion, spending money wisely is an important life skill. It helps you make better choices, avoid financial problems and prepare for the future. Whether you are young or old, it is never too late to start. With simple steps like budgeting, saving and shopping carefully, you can take control of your money and use it in the best way possible.
